Unit 11 introduced teaching receptive skills. How, why and what we read and listen to in the classroom were explained in detail. I learned about the specialist skills needed for understanding the context of particular reading and listening materials. Also, I was introduced to problems learners have with listening and reading, and effective ways to deal with these issues. Finally, I was shown an ESA patchwork lesson that was based around teaching receptive skills. Through the information included in the unit and the task material examples, I feel I learned to be mindful of the importance of selecting appropriate material when teaching receptive skills.
