Teaching EFL in a Kindergarten is a challenge for the teachers since teaching young learners is not like teaching adults as they have some special physical and behavioural characteristics. In order to teach them effectively, teachers should be aware of these differences of this age level as well as the techniques and activities to be implemented in the classroom. It is a demanding and challenging task because young learners need to be provided with an atmosphere which will help to stimulate their imagination and creativity through various activities appropriate for their age group. Hence, to be alerted all the time and being well equipped in the class is important. Teacher’s style stands a huge importance to be able to keep young learners motivated. It would be much easier and faster to teach as long as kids are motivated. Kids learn well by listening, repeating, imitating the teacher. The use of visuals, various activities, games, songs would make learning more enjoyable for kids of that age group. The teacher should keep all instructions clear and simple as in a class of adult learners consists of beginners. Instructions should include relevant gestures and they should be short and simple. It is useful to break down the series of instructions into smaller units like; “Everybody – take your book, please. Stand up. Now, come here, please. Thank you.” Flashcards are really helpful material while teaching children. It improves their knowledge and ability to understand using visual memory. Teachers can also make flashcards more fun with different games like “Left or Right”, “Hide and Seek”, memory games etc. Classroom games are another great fun way of teaching kids. Games make kids to pay attention for longer periods of time and keep them motivated. Games also help encourage children who are shy or reluctant to attend to lessons. Songs are quite entertaining way of teaching a new language for kids. Children love to sing so it gives the teacher a good opportunity to teach concepts, vocabulary etc in a fun way. Songs keep children excited. The most important feature of using songs at teaching a language to young learners is repetition. They contain language patterns, develop listening skills which helps learning the pronunciation. Repetition provides a great practice of children. It helps to improve speed, increase self confidence, and strengthens the connections in the brain of young learners. It might seem boring to repeat the same thing many times however, kids like routines and they feel more confident where they feel familiar with and where they know what’s expected of them. The teacher’s role is quite important here; as he or she makes the children repeat the very same thing, she should be careful about keeping their attention and motivation alive using different tools like songs, visuals, games etc. Building daily routines and sticking to them works very well with children. Another important aspect at teaching young learners is classroom rules. The children always need to know their boundaries, what is acceptable in class. The teacher should establish rules from the beginning and make it clear what is expected from them, what the consequences of breaking rules are, and why those rules and consequences are important. At the same time, the teacher should never forget that they’re not just children but also people who deserve the same respect as the teacher expects from them. As a result, it can be easily said that, children is one of the most challenging group for teaching English as a second language; while at the same time it is so much fun and also rewarding for a teacher.
