The unit focused on two of the four basic skills in any language: receptive skills. This includes reading and listening. The unit introduced the five specialist skills that fall under the receptive skills category which include predictive skills, scanning, skimming, detailed information and deduction from context. Following this was some insightful information on the potential problems that could arise in teaching receptive skills and how to handle them. Also provided in this unit was a practical outline of a typical receptive skills patchwork ESA lesson. I also learned that some of the keys to a successful lesson is pre-teaching difficult language, effective use of varied material and generating interest. This was a very insightful and helpful unit.
