Upon starting this course I had very little idea as to what to expect. I had been teaching english for several years without any formal training of any kind, sort of making it up as I went along. When one enters a job without any formal theory or training, there are weaknesses and blindspots that are hard to identify and tackle. As my education was originally technical, it offered me little to no help with this. I did not know how to organize and execute a class so that the students might gain the most benefit from it. This course has gone a long way to helping me discover where my weaknesses are, and giving me the tools to do a better job. As a native speaker of english, I most certainly take for granted many or most things involved in speaking the language. Upon entry into this course, I was unaware of just how much I took for granted and how little I really knew about teaching english grammar. I suppose that for most untrained ESL teachers this is the case, but it doesn't make it any less startling. This course taught me the grammar I immediately needed to know, and delivered it in a systematic and useful way. Since I have started this course, I have already been able to use much of the material I have learned. So far, I have been able to practice my new found knowledge of teaching past, present and future tenses by clearly explaining the formation and use of these items to my students. I have begun organizing my classes according to the Engage, Study and Activate method and have already seen positive results. The limits and horizons of what I can do have expanded as a result of this course. I have gained knowledge of the process of learning for both children and adults which has shed some light on what has been somewhat of a mysterious area for me. I am now able to put in better perspective what I see in the classroom, and respond with correct to solutions to problems that arise. I feel that I am better able to anticipate trouble and apply correction in a timely manner. This course has given me the confidence and inspiration to continue improving my abilities by showing me the theory and methods behind teaching ESL. It has helped me return to the world of self improvement through study and upgrading of my skills. The experience has been very rewarding and the guidance from the tutor has been skillful and very much appreciated.
