Singapore
The world’s only island city-state, Singapore is a cosmopolitan, tropical metropolis where people from all over the world live and work. In this exotic city you can sip your espresso on the balcony while watching as massive tropical thunderstorms roll in one minute only to be quickly replaced by gorgeous sunshine the next. Once known as the “Jewel of the British Empire”, Singapore’s British past can be seen in buildings such as the Raffles Hotel named after the founder of Singapore; Stamford Raffles, street names and numerous statues and other monuments.
Singapore abounds with interesting things to see and do. A visit to Sentosa Island, home to Universal Studios Singapore, Madame Tussauds and the SEA Aquarium, is a must for any visitor. Clarke Quay, Arab Street and Boat Quay will take care of your nightlife and dining requirements with restaurants and bars around every corner. For a more sedate experience, head to one of the parks and hire a bicycle or take a trip to the islands of Pulau Ubin and Kusu Island. Pulau Ubin is one of the last places in Singapore to be free from urbanization and is a great place to see the local flora and fauna. Kusu Island is home to pristine beaches, beautiful lagoons and a tortoise sanctuary.
Singapore’s transport infrastructure makes getting around and seeing all the city has to offer easy. Buses, taxis and trains run around the city and there are numerous city tours available as well as tourist passes to help you explore.

-
What is the course schedule?
Expand
On the first day of the course an orientation will be held. Orientation will be followed by the first class on Monday morning at 9:30 am. During the orientation, an in depth course schedule will be provided. A typical session will run between 9:30 and 4:30 pm Monday to Friday with morning and late afternoon breaks, and a lunch break also included. However, there will also be some evenings required for teaching practice.
All teacher trainees are expected to attend all of the training sessions on the schedule unless a medical condition or emergency makes it impossible in which case medical treatment is required. It is extremely important for trainees to be present at every Teaching Practice (TP). These sessions are difficult to organize and rescheduling is difficult which may result in an additional fee for the trainee.
-
What can I expect during teaching practice?
Expand
The teaching practice is conducted at the school and we have Japanese and Korean students. These students are usually non-native speaking expats living in Singapore who make the lessons engaging, enjoyable and consistently give constructive feedback. Most of the students have studied at our centre with trained and experienced EFL teachers. They are not required to come to the class so their presence is merely out of the desire to help the trainees to improve their teaching.
-
Who can attend the TEFL course? Do I need to be native English speaker?
Expand
You need to be at least 18 years old to enrol in our course. There is no maximum age, but do keep in mind that some institutions may not employ teachers beyond a certain age.
While you don’t need to be a native speaker to attend, you do need to be fluent in English.
We define fluency as having at least a C1 level on the CEFR scale of language proficiency.
-
Is there a dress code?
Expand
For most sessions at the school, there will not be a strict dress code requirement. However, the school is full of educators and professionals and we want to maintain a level of professionalism thus please dress appropriately and be mindful of others. The school is a place of work, and we would like to remind you to be respectful to those around you.
There will be a dress requirement during the Teaching Practice (TP) sessions. During the Teaching Practice the trainees will be required to dress in business attire and follow some guidelines.
Women:
Shoulders must be covered. Low-cut necklines or short skirts will not be permitted. No low-cut necklines or very short skirts. Flip flops, bermuda’s, or sandals are also not permitted.
Men:
Slacks or khakis must be worn, jeans are not appropriate. Either short or long sleeved shirts are acceptable so long as there is a collar. A tie is not required but if you would like to, you may. Dress shoes or loafers are required. Tennis shoes, sandals, or bermuda’s, are not acceptable. Long hair should be tied back.
-
What should I bring for course studies?
Expand
A pen, a notebook for taking notes, and a three-ring binder to organize lesson plans are essential. Forms, and other information will be given and an organized binder would help all of this remain neat and tidy.
A recording device, or cell phone to record, is not required but it is a good idea. In the past trainees at various locations have given feedback that it made the course easier. This helped in reviewing the course material, lectures, interviews, and student feedback. Although it is not a requirement we suggest doing so.
Books are provided and available to be borrowed at the school, and in the study room. However, any material leaving the campus requires permission from the staff.
All trainees are required to prepare their own materials for their Teaching Practice (TP). The training school maintains a supply of materials but the school is not responsible to provide materials. Materials such as poster board, markers, glue, paper, pens, and more for developing teaching material will have to be purchased by the trainees themselves.
The photocopy machine at the school is available for all trainees to use without charge.
-
