Pronunciation is extremely difficult area, especially in languages far removed linguistically from English. A German most certainly has an easier time learning how to pronounce English than an Igbo. It is important to stress pronunciation, as it is essential to being understood, however, too much focus on wrong pronunciation, can cause a student to lose confidence, and therefore does more harm than good. What we have to do as teachers is find the middle way, and stress it without students making it a life or death situation.
