It is important to be a living contradiction, authoritative and likable, correcting, but not condescending, a mentor and a friend. In many way teaching is performative, and it is important that your performance is consistent. Never let a bad day soak into your class room. Never pick favorites. Never set an example of being lazy or not punctual.
