This lesson on phonology and pronunciation discusses the different ways we pronounce and spell English words. Two words that are spelled similarly may be pronounced completely differently. For example, dear and bear are only one word different but the vowels are pronounced differently. Teaching different pronunciations can be very difficult. One strategy developed by linguists for differentiating the different pronunciations of particular sounds is the International Phonetic Alphabet which assigns different symbols to different sounds such as th, ch, ou, ee, ea, etc.
