The Importance of Home Tutoring in Vietnam
Home tutoring in Vietnam can play a crucial role in helping students reach their full potential. With the traditional method of education being limited in its ability to cater to individual student needs, 1 on 1 tutoring can make a significant impact in the learning journey of students, especially those with learning disabilities and special needs. In this blog post, we delve into the benefits of 1 on 1 interaction in education and why it's a must for students. So if you're looking to find out how you can make a difference in a student's life, read on to discover the missing pieces of the puzzle that could prevent them from becoming the best version of themselves.
Conventional vs Unconventional Method
Have you ever wondered why many parents across the US say no to conventional education to have their children study at home? The word homeschooling may have never been heard in third world countries, but it has been lawful in the US for several reasons. Self paced and individualised education designed to meet their personal needs and special needs making this whole learning experience very unique and incredible .
Differing from the flexibility in America,Vietnamese students have to finish the 12 years in public school in order to go to college.
During my time in grade school, the ratio of students to teachers was around 34 students per teacher which can be a challenge for both. In case someone flunked their test or do not perform so well in class, they are encouraged to sit in group classes at night with other 20+ kids to have extra study time. So no play time allowed but you get to do maths and physics instead.
In college, I once was an ESL kid sitting in English writing class with native English speaking kids. Guess what, it is not something I appreciated till these days but failure taught me a lot.
Students with special needs
Students with learning disabilities such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often go undiagnosed in a third world country. Oftentimes they do not have anyone to turn to as learning disabilities are not thoroughly understood in Vietnam.
Those who struggle to stay focused in class and fall behind in different subjects usually present with low self esteem and lack of confidence. While the high ranking kids get compliments, the less fortunate ones go home with judgement and embarrassment.
To merely think about the experience of a child with dyslexia having to read in the same group of other kids with perfect reading score. How likely will the unlucky kid thrive let alone their pride and love of learning a second language?
Rather than letting them see how other kids are more brilliant and better at reading ,we shift to a more productive teaching style. It enables teachers to design solutions according to individual needs.
What resources do you need to make a difference in a student’s life? What are the missing puzzles that have prevented many students from becoming the best version of themselves?
1 on 1 tutoring is a need IF NOT A MUST
My very first ESL student told me she had wanted to study 1 on 1 because of her not so good English at the time. Most importantly, she not only trusted me but openly shared her thoughts and needs with me.
My time alone with her helped improve her listening and speaking skills quickly. In particular, without the fear of staying behind or pressure from the front rank of the best students in class, home tutoring makes a better and faster progress for weak students
Very similar to personal training sessions at the gym, teaching 1 on 1 is a great opportunity for both students and teachers to focus on individuals and their uniqueness. It may surprise the students how extra care and support play a big role in their educational lives.
Benefits of 1-on-1 Tutoring that Group Study cannot Offer
Not too long ago I once observed a speech therapist, also an accent coach who helped an acting student speaking English with an American accent. That says it is important to have clear pronunciation so messages can come across to the audience. Otherwise, it is very hard to compete with other native English speakers or get the part they want after the audition.
By having the students read a script and focusing solely on one student, the coach is able to point out every single sound that is not American. And then she corrected her tongue position, intonation and how the sound is made till it’s good within the session.
Clearly, the student gets the special feeling of I’m the only one in the room. She is not judged by others or distracted by the group.
Not only did she save a lot of time by doing a private accent coach, this soon to be actress prepares for her audition to the best of her ability leaving no stone unturned.
Small Changes Make a Big Difference
It’s not the group lesson that is not good enough. It’s the quality over quantity that sets someone apart from the rest
Many homeschoolers get accepted to college at 16 while it’s 18 for traditional high schoolers. This suggests the idea of how standing alone allows one to go at their own speed and reach their fullest potential when the crowd literally holds them back.
By shortening the learning curve, teachers can take positive steps to make dreams come true as well as facilitating their process more intelligently.
