A couple of years ago I journeyed to Japan as an ESL teacher without any certification and it was a struggle. Even though support was provided by my hiring company it wasn’t enough to cater to the challenges that were faced on a more than regular basis. As I am an individual who enjoys traveling, I have decided that the best opportunity is to teach English once more, hence the decision to take this course. In retrospect had I been equipped with TEFL certification I would have been a star in addition to my years of teaching experience. As a native speaker, we are not cognizant of the many challenges that a non-native speaker is faced with, we simply take it for granted.

Benefits of TEFL
Taking a TEFL course prepares you to a certain level to cater to many challenges that you will come across in the EFL industry. There are many options for taking classes. TEFL courses are delivered fully online, in-class, or a mixture of both. It is advised that a minimum of 120 hrs, of course, be taken to satisfy employment purposes. A TEFL course places you in the front seat of a non-native speaker’s world to have a firsthand experience of how they see, feel, hear, and understand English.
In the ESL industry completing a TEFL course makes you more marketable as employers will see that you are serious about the job and you will be invested in your substantive post as an ESL instructor. The idea of restriction to a particular country is removed because now you are certified. Let me hasten to add that a TEFL certification is now required to process documents to obtain a work visa.
