The unit is about receptive skills: reading and listening. There are 2 kinds of reasons for reading and listening: for a purpose or for entertainment. Depending on the goals, readers and listeners can use different methods: - Guessing the content from the headline or introduction - Scanning for specific information - Skimming to get the general idea of the content - Listening detailed information - Understanding the meaning from the context, not the meaning of individual words or phrases. In order to build students’ confidence with receptive skills, teachers should choose the topics that all students are interested, let them talk and discuss about some things related to the topic and pre-teach new vocabularies. After reading or listening, questions will be given to make students understand clearly, then students will practise.
