The teacher has many roles throughout the classroom, and one of the more important roles is to impart skills to the students. When imparting the English language to students, it is important to make it as fun as possible so that the students stay engaged and motivated throughout the lesson. A helpful way to do this is at the beginning of class get the students engaged with the lesson before jumping straight into the work. What the teacher does during this introductory time should connect with the lesson topic and then move into the actual lesson. This is the part where a teacher will impart skills to the students the most. A teacher can do this in many different ways such as doing an analysis of text/dialogue, elicitation, hangman for spelling, and tongue twisters for pronunciation. After the skills have been taught to students, it is important to put them into action by playing games and doing activities to get the students to start using and practicing those skills. To fully impart knowledge and skills to the students, it is important that the teacher establishes rapport with the students because this will help to keep the students engaged and become more motivated. Establishing rapport with the students is a role that every teacher should take on because this helps the students to become more comfortable and be willing to be vulnerable in the teacher’s classroom. Teachers should begin to establish this on the first day they meet their students, but it is also something that continues over the whole course. One of the best ways to establish this is at the beginning of the course and getting to know your students. When getting to know your students, make sure you use their names when calling on them so that it shows you know them more personally. It is important to get to know a little bit about each student and what the students’ interests are. Then take these interests and throughout the course use them in examples, worksheets, and games. To continue to strengthen the rapport between the student and teacher, the teacher can pick out a few different articles or books for reading assignments that include the interests of the students. This will not only show the students that the teacher paid attention to what they said, but it also helps to keep the students motivated and engaged in the activity. Another important role of teachers is to be a model for their students in the classroom. When teaching in front of a class of students, it is important to have the correct pronunciation and use the correct English sayings. This is because many of the students that you are teaching do not have an English-speaking model at home, and when the students come to class the teacher is one of the only role models they have. Teachers should be sure to use some idiomatic English because these are phrases that we use in everyday English-speaking life. When you use them in the classroom, it models for students how English conversation works and also what the idioms mean, so when students hear them outside the classroom they will know those idiomatic phrases. An often overlooked role of teachers is to be a motivator to the students. Learning English is a tricky subject and many students can get discouraged or nervous when it comes to learning the language. It is imperative that teachers encourage their students. When students make a mistake, the teacher must help them fix it, but they should do so in a manner that is encouraging so that the students do not want to give up on trying to learn. When students get something right, the teacher should praise them and let them know that they are doing a good job and to keep on going. These are just some of the many roles that a teacher must take on to be an effective educator. These basics show the beginning of the different ways a teacher should interact with students. However, the most important aspect of teaching is that while teachers are assessing how students are doing, they should also be constantly assessing how they are doing as educators, and making adjustments to fit the needs of the individual students.
