Classroom games have proven to be successful in refreshing the minds of students and creating a better learning environment. For instance, starting a new topic with ice breaker games creates excitement especially in young learners. They feel connected and thus they can boost their understanding of the topic. The teacher on his or her part benefits from the cooperation of the students. Considering the fact that teaching methods keep evolving, it is almost an uphill task to kick-start lessons without ice breaking games Through these games, students feel empowered to make their own rules and think creatively. Motivation is also another major gain. Also, one cannot ignore the fact that these games can build self confidence and make learners comfortable throughout the learning process. When one examines the challenges of teaching in this age, it is easy to notice that young learners easily get bored or suffer from a short concentration span. Sometimes, you see them suffering from the stress of learning at their inconvenience. This is when boredom kicks in. In such a situation, the teacher cannot achieve much. The only way forward here is to initiate mind-waking classroom games that would de-stress the students and also go a long way to unlock their learning potential. Certainly, classroom games would stimulate a competitive behavior in the students and also serve as a good bonding factor for the classroom. Values such as patience, understanding or better say empathy and discipline which are major gains of classroom games. Therefore, it is of paramount importance, to value the magical role classroom games play in the life of the student. Descriptions Walking Around the Circle This game is where you need to put the students in a circle on the floor and teacher will have to arrange some flashcards the student have already studied once or twice in class. Get one student stand up to walk around the circle, teacher will count from 1 to 5 while the student walking, teacher will start counting when teacher reaches to 5 then he/she will drop the flashcard behind the student and let that student say the word or describe the picture on the card. This helps students learn new words faster while having fun. Lip Reading Use the flashcards so that you know which word to say and to show students if they are correct. silently mouth the vocabulary word. Make it as exaggerated as needed. This game gets students curious and interested in the game. Pass and Say Have Student sit in a circle. Show them a flashcard and say the word. Pass it to the kid sitting next to you and encourage him/her to say the word and pass it to the next person. This can be use to get weaker students to learn some words. Music Circle pass This is where we group students. Give random students a flashcard: one for every 3 or four student you have in your group. As it plays, students pass the cards around when you pause the music have the kids who have the flashcard say the word on the card. This helps to improve vocabulary. Memory Game Here, we need picture flashcards and the written word card for this game. This will only work if you have worked on word recognition with your students. you lay all cards facedown on the floor. students take turns to flip over two cards in hope that they get a match. kids love this game and it help them to memories words. What’s in the Classroom Here, we get students sit in a circle on the floor. you first have to call out two or three smartest student show few things in the classroom then to the weaker once. This makes weaker students gain confidence and participate. Exchange Notes Randomly This is more likely for higher level students. In this game, we ask students to write a short and interesting note, write a long unique number on it, fold it and it back in a box. Each person can come up and draw one random note, reads and writes a constructive and meaningful rely to it before folding and hanging it back. once all notes are collected back, mix them up, and everyone can come together and collect their notes based on the unique number to maintain anonymity and privacy. Getting responses in this way can be memorable because it is personal and thoughtful. Pictionary Pick a student and show him/her a flashcard picture or whisper a word into his/her ear. The student draws the picture on the board and the first student in the class to guess the picture gets to draw the next picture. this is good for reviewing vocab. Encouraging Game This game is meant to encourage the unconfident students. Make students sit in a circle you might want to keep the target students let’s say, in the right side. The teacher will then use flashcards with pictures which the students have seen before and teacher will then show the card to the target students before the stronger students and start the word on the card to help the target student (s) get the idea of what is on the card. In my opinion, this helps weaker students gain confidence and participate in class. Story Guessing Game This game makes the students concentrate and listen to what the teacher is saying. The teacher will tell a story about his/her own students regarding the things they do in the classroom and what they talk about while playing together. For example, once upon a time, there was boy who always wears a cap to school, and the next can be a girl, once upon a time there is a girl who always wears a princess dress to school. This game helps improve listening skills and concentration. What’s on the Capet In this game, we use a classroom carpet which has pictures on them. For instance, using a carpet that has pictures of shapes. Have students stand in a the various shapes and make sure they get the point of the game. Later, ask each of them what they see on the carpet. The student that says more words emerges as the winner of the game. Kids like to compete and this game makes them have more interest in the lesson. One will definitely be the winner, but the teacher should make all of them winners to in order to motivate them.
