Teach English in Shanba Zhen - Bayannao'er Shi — Bayan Nur
Teaching English can be challenging, especially if you do not have the right materials, support, or educational background that may include classroom managing, teaching skills, and English grammar. When I began working as an ESL teacher, I had never taken any educational courses on how to perform this job. While I did have experience working with the demographic I was assigned to (young children and teenagers), it was different because I was teaching English for the first time. I did have an idea of how to manage a classroom and I had an understanding of different teaching styles. However, I did not have knowledge on how to teach an English class. During my time as an English teacher, there was a lot of trial and error on my part. I learned a lot, but I may have avoided many errors if I had taken the TEFL course beforehand. As a native speaker of English, I do not have to think as hard as those learning the language. It comes natural because I have lived and studied my whole life in English. Taking this TEFL course has changed my perceptive on how to teach English in a class. If the teacher does not understand the grammar point, then how will the students understand it? The TEFL courses breakdown the rules of English Grammar for the teacher. It provides a refresher for the teacher and breaks down each grammar point in a way that is specific to teaching a student. Taking the TEFL course allows the teacher to remember important grammar points in English as well as the best way possible to teach the grammar point to the student. This brings me to my second point: a teacher should have the ability to help all types of students and prepare for many different scenarios that are possible in an ESL class. For example, while teaching,I noticed that different levels of English learners began to emerge. This created an obstacle for me when doing lesson plans. Some of my students needed to be challenged while others needed more support. This situation was discussed several times throughout the TEFL course and it provided techniques to solve this issue in a classroom. For example, in Unit 20 it suggests “pairing a strong student with a weak student when doing pair work”. Whether you are teaching young or old students, in a group or individually; teachers must adapt to these situations and provide appropriate material and use appropriate techniques. Lastly, the world is always changing, which means there are new and innovative techniques that are coming out every day. It can be very hard as teachers to keep up with these new developments in our field. However, the TEFL course provides many resources for teachers to use even after they have graduated from the course. For example, the course provides links for free worksheets and game ideas. The course also offers a lot of lesson planning and survey examples for teachers to use in the classroom. Throughout the course you are given information that is beneficial and useful for you and your students. While a teacher can conduct a ESL classroom without having to take a TEFL course, it can be a challenge, especially if it is their first time teaching English. The TEFL course provides the education, support, and resources needed for teachers to use in their classroom. In my own experience, taking the TEFL Course has helped to improve many areas of my teaching style and classroom management. It is beneficial not only for the teacher but also for the students.
