Teach English in WulAshAn Zhen - Bayannao'er Shi — Bayan Nur
To praise anyone's efforts or good work is always appreciated, more over recommended. I believe that praises are an integral part in everyone's day today life specially teacher's. It can create a magical effect and gives good results in personal life. However, a student's life is a bit different as they are in a process of becoming responsible beings. So, praises must be used very carefully on them. As we are discussing about the young learners, things to keep in mind is that they don't really know that in reality how much a person has to work hard to get praised, and that too is not guaranteed that the other person would really appreciate the efforts or no. Hence, we must praise the kids and use praises very carefully. Over use of compliments can make the student overconfident. I have some observations to share with you that you are free to follow on how to praise a student, intern boosting them. But, first we need to know what is right and what is wrong, we need to know what is it that you shouldn't do when it comes to praising. It shouldn't give a false believe within. Too much futile praising can be really down for the student's future. It holds no value for the student if received time and again for small and big reasons. The student feels that there is no point in thinking or doing different things as he has no motivation. When it becomes a day to day, a regular activity to be praised, we cannot expect anything different from that person. It gives no scope of betterment in the student’s as he thinks there is no need to do so because he is perfect anyways. I remember when I was a kid and if ever got any praises, I would just keep smiling the entire day and would want to do something or the other to keep receiving those praises again and again. But, not to forget repeated and for no reason praises, stopped giving me motivation and Goosebumps. We can think of some ways to keep that tingling feeling on in our student's heart. At times public appreciation isn't that real thing you might want to be praised in private, as a few are shy. On the other hand for some students praises on a platform can be good enough. It depends of the situation that a teacher needs to analyse. It is believed and practiced in the schools always that at times using gestures gives a very subtle and sweet feeling to the students. So, at times the teacher can think of praising students using some hand gestures, a smile, or a head nodding. This way it is considered to be a personal praising, also, it doesn't consume a lot of time and the class isn't disturbed. As I have mentioned earlier that praises should be used carefully. By saying it I mean that of the teacher praises everyone and anyone, it holds no value. So even the student has to believe that he has really done well and deserve some acknowledgement and appreciation. The effect like this is more. There are other ways to appreciate students in a general way is by motivating the entire class in a group. That happens as soon as the lecture starts. When the teacher takes a briefing of the entire class. That time all students are fresh and want to start their day a fresh. That is a good time to commence your general motivation and appreciation. This gives the students a new boost and confidence on the gone day and motivates then to keep learning in the correct way. How students will realise that they have done good? The answer is through your morning briefing and level and intensity of how you praise them. In today's time students are smart and confident so, we cannot think of faking praises at them. So it sure has to be genuine and much deserving. Mostly it is spontaneous and unplanned, even if it is a small gesture or a word it must be spontaneous. This is not the only way though yet an effective one. Now here we have one more aspect to cover on praising. Praising in a positive way is good, and to know the power of praising even when the student has done wrong you must see it yourself. When anyone makes a mistake and is down and out, positive words of appreciation helps them regain their lost confidence. Analysing the gap made in student's life because of that small mistake, the teacher anytime can take a one on one session with the student. As the teacher is also acting like a therapist and a counsellor she knows how to uplift the confidence of a student. Here, positive praising for wrong doing or mistakes made, sure helps. This is not exactly praising, but it is letting the student know in a subtle way that it is ok to be wrong and that mistakes can be rectified. This important thing is to try out, reach out , the rest will fall into place. Praises are to uplift the confidence, boost up what is reduced and to realise what is there already which is good. Highlighting that quality is in a subtle manner is the main goal of praising for mistakes made. Praising for mistakes doesn’t meant that you say ‘good you made that mistake’, it is mainly done so that the doer of that mistake understands that it's ok to make mistake, but whatever was done, the efforts taken, etc were commendable. And the next time it will be much better and even can be perfect. Saying harsh words for mistakes made, never fetch good and positive results. We have also been listening about the punishments the kids are given for wrong behaviour. However, I hold a different opinion on this is that it was always a contradiction on the same. In Praises v/s Punishment, praises always perform better. In cases like these it is advised to use both carefully. Praises can perform miracles not punishments.
