It' a great honor for me to have a chance to be here talking about my opinions on online teaching. And I'd like first of all, show my great appreciation to ITTT who present thee fabulous course to us. So Today's topic, Is teaching ESL/EFL online convenient? I'm a teacher in an English training center for 2 years. From my point of view, yes it's super convient for students to take online courses. For example if you are on a bussiness trip and you couldn't go to the place, the high-tech and internet make it possible to take classes anywhere around the world.it's super easy to communicate with teachers with what you are confused about. For those who are in the hospital, of course online courses bring them a chance not to be a waste of time staying at hospital and do nothing. For white colars who needs to work until maybe 10 or 11pm, it's a great time for them to talk with the teacher in America. So I think for most of students, it's really convenient. But For teachers, it's not really convenient to teach an online course. the online courses focus on the language skill of speaking and listening, The basic type of an online classes would be students and a teacher sitting in front of the computer, talking with each other with some visual aids like real things or more commonly, Powerpoints. So there's less interaction happens by using gestures and body languages. These 2 things are critical for young learners and beginners. So this kind of class is not godd for them to take. Then actually, online courses aare not very convenient for teachers. For example, an ESA lesson, For the engage part, games would be a great way to let your students thinking and speaking in English, but almost all kinds of game are not availiable doing online, So you have to spend long time or even money to adapt it into you class or make it an online version.Next, the first step in the study phase would be eliciting students, gestures and body languages are 2 major points for it. So for eliciting parts, as a teacher, you need to completely change the way to elicit, either using real stuff or pictures. For the Activate stage, a lot of activities require interactions between students and teachers. So some of them is abandoned. Also you need to keep your class disciplined, it cannot be a mess. but for online classesit's barely impossible to let all of them talk while having a great class environment. So either they got less chance to speak, or they speak but nobody could hear what they're talking about. So Bringing as a whole, taking online classes are easy for students but it's not an easy thing for teachers to prepare. But as the technology developing, I hope all these problems could be solved. Now it's a new trend to teach English online. Hope in the future we could have a perfect version of online classes.
