Level; Beginner Learning objectives; By the end of the lesson students will be able to recognize vocabulary related to food; practice ordering from menu in a restaurant. Time; 1 hour Assessment: The Assessment of Teaching Vocabulary related to food is to monitor the students understanding of vocabulary. The teacher helps recognize where students are struggling and address problems immediately. Materials; Board, markers, copies of a dialogue at the restaurant, menus, trays, plates, spoon and fork, pictures of foods such as broccoli, apple, lettuce, tomato, egg, spaghetti, salad, steak etc. Examples of effective method: Discussion Activity Drilling Exercise Communication Games Observations Procedure: 1. Warm up, Before starting a game the teacher pre-teach the vocabulary of each foods. Begin by presenting pictures of food, stick each pictures on the board write it's name next to it. Once the students understand the vocabulary of each foods the teacher can revision the vocabulary. 2. Divide the class in groups of 3-4 students. Each group is given one food category. For example meat for group 1 then each member of the group comes up with words related to the category. The words cannot be mispronounced or repeated. If there is a mistake, the other groups that are listening to first group have to clap and identify what type of mistake has been made. The teacher will choose another group and another category of food to the new group. The game is over when all the categories that the teacher has chosen have been covered. The example of categories are; meats, desserts, diary, fruits and vegetables. Example; Teacher; this group has to think of words related to vegetables. The other group have to pay attention. If you hear a mispronunciation you have to clap. Are you ready? students 1: potato students 2: broccoli students 3: onion students 4: garlich (CLAP!) the word is "garlic" 3.Another activities is Ordering in a restaurant. The teacher will present a menu to the students and plays the dialogue of ordering a meal in the restaurant. The students listen and take notes as the teacher demonstrate the dialogue. If the students are not familiar with taking notes at this level, then create a list of food words with some extra ones that are not mentioned in the dialogue and have them circle the words that they hear. The dialogue the students will listen as it follows; Waiter; Good evening. Here is the menu. Customer; hello! thanks. What is the dish of the day? Waiter; Today, the special is beef steak and spaghetti bolognese. Customer: hmm.. that sounds delicious! I'll order the spaghetti bolognese. Waiter; would you like salad on it? customer; yes, that would be nice. I'd like cucumber, tomato, and lettuce. waiter; Sure Sir, and for you Ma'am? what would you like to eat? customer2: I'll have the mushroom soup with some garlic bread and beef steak. waite; would you like salad with it? customer 2; yes, please. Waiter; would you like anything to drink? customer: I'll have water please. customer2: A coke please. waiter; certainly. Feedback; Check the student's pronunciation and fluency. If necessary play the dialogue again. Write the words on the board and have them practice drill pronunciation then Elicit the function and structures from the students. Have the students listen to the whole dialogue again, with the purpose of paying attention to the way the customers order their meals and how the waiters offers something to eat and drink. Write on the board. Then after practicing the words and eliciting the important vocabulary from the dialogue. It's time to give the students for another activity. Have students change members and role play the situation at the restaurants without looking at the dialogue. Provide them cue cards or pictures to subtitle the foods and drinks in the original dialogue. If possible, provide the students with realia, such as menu, pen, note pad, cups, plates, trays and so on. Divide the class in two groups. Each group will have to brainstorm different kinds of restaurant. Examples are; coffee shop, tea house, steak house, Thai Restaurant, Chinese Restaurant etc. Then they have to choose one they would like to own and create a menu for their own restaurant. Once each group has created a menu, split the groups and have them role-play a conversation, asking about and ordering their favorite food based on the menu created by the group. Finally, Give the winning team either points, or something small like a couple of pieces of candy for each team member. Keep an suitable and fun to the whole activity so that the students will learn and cooperate. Observations; -Teacher provides an enthusiastic environment that encourage the students to learn and cooperate in activity. -The teacher able to know the participation in team work and behavior of class. -The students’ understanding of vocabulary and material in class, and able to remember vocabulary at the conclusion of the lesson.
