It was helpful to look at the different challenges in teaching and learning how to communicate in a new language well, and to think about key differences between speaking and writing. It was helpful to see sample lessons for teaching both speaking as well as writing skills. I hadn't thought about how often writing can be left out of a lesson, due to a desire to help students gain more confidence and fluency with their speaking, but knowing that teaching and practicing writing is also very important. It was also helpful to be reminded of the variety of reasons why a student may be reluctant to speak in class, as well as additional considerations when teaching writing, such as handwriting and spelling.
