Teach English in HuanghuAtang Zhen - Huai'an Shi
Having the possibility to teach someone is having the possibility to change his/her life. In any language, there are four basic skills reading and listening as we call receptive skills, and writing and speaking as we call productive skills. But here, we will just talk about the receptive skills. We use receptive skills for entertainment, we use it when we can feel the joy and pleasure of reading or listening something; or for special purpose when we need or have an obligation to read or listen to something because we need to understand notice for example. Receptive skills have five different kinds, the detailed reading, deduction, scanning when there is specific information, prediction and skimming for general overview. When we teach the receptive skills, we may face few problems with the students. For the reading, the students trend to read the sentence one by one or word for word, and the length and the structure of the sentence may also be the reason of this issue. For the listening, students may have some problems with the information, the speed of speech and especially the teacher accent. But we can avoid those problems. Before any activity, the teacher can pre-teach vocabulary and grammar. He/she must choose wisely the resources and topics that he/she might use, and he/she must create interest with the students before he/she starts the activity or the lesson. It is not easy for learners to study language that they do not know, that is why the teacher must try to expose them to the language as much as possible, and for that we will use the PATCHWORK ESA. Patchwork ESA has seven phases that we need to use but before the teacher starts any activity, first of all he/she must show few information about the subject to help the students to get an idea about what they will talk about during the course. Let’s take the famous singer Michael Jackson. To engage the student and create interest between teacher and students, and to make the students talk in English, the teacher can ask them few questions about the subject like who is he? If the students have information about him, or what would they like to know about him? There, we use the skimming or scanning task to introduce the text. Then comes the first study phase where teacher can pre-teach new vocabulary and grammar useful for the text and he/she can check the students if they understand. Then the second phase of engage stage comes, and there, we will read all the text for comprehension. Afterward comes the second phase of study where the teacher can check the understanding of the student by asking them comprehension question and correct the students if they need to be corrected. Thereafter comes he first phase of activate stage where students can write what they know about the subject, here about the singer Michael Jackson. And when they have finished, the teacher can correct their errors from this first activate stage. And finally, to close the activity, the teacher can ask the student to write small biography about any person that they know or they like and ask to the classmate to guess who that person is. We cannot expect that the students can be fluently speaking, writing, reading or listening by just giving them basic lesson in class, the teacher must create something that students may find attracted and help them to enjoy the course; teacher must encourage them to practice and communicate with native speaker not just for receptive skills but it will be helpful for productive skills also.
