Business English: A Wikipedia search of the line Business English provides the response quoted below: “Business English is a part of English for specific purposes and can be considered a specialism within English language learning and teaching, or a variant of international English. Many non-native English speakers study the subject with the goal of doing business with English-speaking countries, or with companies located outside the English-speaking world but which nonetheless use English as a shared language or lingua franca. Much of the English communication that takes place within business circles all over the world occurs between non-native speakers. In cases such as these, the object of the exercise is efficient and effective communication. [1] The strict rules of grammar are in such cases sometimes ignored, when, for example, a stressed negotiator's only goal is to reach an agreement as quickly as possible. (See linguist Braj Kachru's theory of the "expanding circle".) Business English means different things to different people. For some, it focuses on vocabulary and topics used in the worlds of business, trade, finance, and international relations. For others it refers to the communication skills used in the workplace, and focuses on the language and skills needed for typical business communication such as presentations, negotiations, meetings, small talk, socializing, correspondence, report writing, and a systematic approach. In both of these cases it can be taught to native speakers of English, for example, high school students preparing to enter the job market. One can also study it at a college or university. Institutes around the world have courses or modules in BE available, which can lead to a degree in the subject. [2]” The quoted content above perfectly summarizes what Business English is and rightly so is a good reflection of the course content that I studied. I must indicate that that the same has been quoted purely for factual reference purposes. The world now been described often as a global village has a chunk of it been represented by the local and global business communities. Whether a business or venture is small and local sized or big and globally recognised, one very common thing that they share is the need to communicate effectively, efficiently and promptly in order to have their product or vision known to their targeted audience. I must hasten to state that in this regard, English is not the only or prioritized language for every business or business entity. However, English is increasingly becoming one if not the most common used language in the world as we speak. Therefore, the need for businesses and owners to incorporate the English language into their ventures. The benefits of knowing how to speak and communicate effectively in English to businesses and owners is immesurable in our time and day, hence the increasing demand in numbers of English teachers in non-English speaking countries. English is gradually becoming a pre requisite for employment in some companies in countries that are not native English speaking countries. This suggests that the modules that are been thought in preparation for teaching Business English are appropriate and will help solve the need of knowing how to speak and write English in the relevant cases. It is safe to say, after completing this course that learning Business English can be of a personal choice or an obligation by place of work or circumstance. The motivation for everyone to learn English will obviously vary and so the expected benefits to the learner can only be quantified by the individual. But in general terms, I would believe that knowing English even as a foreigner can come in handy in so many ways. While travelling around the world on personal holidays, we come into contact with so many people and some of whom are likely going to be English speaking people. Our interaction with them can come with immerse benefits as we share ideas and dialogue, become friends and in some cases become business partners, expanding or starting global ventures. Whatever the merits of learning business English are, in my humble opinion will certainly surpass the demerits.
