In this essay, I will examine the differences between online TEFL courses and onsite TEFL courses. There will be four main differences discussed. These differences are the pace of the courses, the cost of the courses, the difference in course teaching experience, and aid with job guidance. I will be using facts about CELTA in this essay. CELTA is a type of TEFL course First, there is the pace between online and onsite courses. The pace of online and onsite courses are incredibly different. Most onsite courses are a month-long when taken full-time (see links 1 and 2). Some TEFL courses offer part-time courses, which are longer (see link 3). Whereas online courses give the student a time limit, for example, this course gives the student six months to complete the course. This was one of the reasons why I chose this course because I could work on projects while completing the course. When the student does a full-time onsite course, they cannot work because they must focus completely on the course; that was not possible for me. Second, there is the cost of the courses. Online courses tend to be cheaper than onsite courses. For example, I paid less than a thousand dollars for this course. Whereas, the cost of the CELTA is almost three thousand dollars (see link 4).That is over double what I paid. On top of the cost of the onsite course, the student must add on the cost of travel to the school, housing and food during the course of the class. Depending on the location of the school these additional costs can be very expensive. It was after considering those costs, which caused me to choose the online option. This was my main reason for taking the online course. Third, how the teaching experience is handled during the onsite TEFL courses. Online courses do not give students a chance to teach unless they do a blended online course. A blended online course is when you take units online, then the student has to travel to the school to teach a few English classes which are supervised and graded. An example for this type of course, is the online CELTA course because teaching is one of the requirements of the CELTA (see link 1). For students that do not have any experience with teaching people or who are not confident, I would recommend a course with teaching. However, I have taught martial art classes for over ten years. Also, I supervised and taught students while I was a graduate student in Archaeology. This means I am comfortable with teaching. Finally, there is the aid with job guidance with finding a job after the course. With online courses, this only becomes available after the course is completed. However, this is different from onsite courses. From talking with different programs, they sometimes hold met and greet events with local language schools. This means that students who take onsite courses might have an easier time finding jobs. For example, my girlfriend is Finnish, who works in both Finland and Spain. Since I have taken an online course; I fear that I will have a harder time finding a job in one of those countries. During this essay, I hope that I showed the four main differences between online and onsite TEFL courses. Again, these differences are the pace of the courses, the cost of the courses, the differences in course teaching experience, and the aid with guidance. Each type of TEFL course has its advantages and disadvantages; the student must weigh them and decide for themselves. After doing research for many months, I believe getting a TEFL certification is information to get your foot into a job, but once you have a couple of years’ experience it becomes less important.
