Educating children is one of the most challenging and rewarding role. Children are usually illustrated as a bath sponge when it comes to absorbing language input. They could learn easily learn a language without much force at a young age. As teachers or educators, we need to be able to nurture them to have a positive mind and become an independent individual in future. A child’s future would largely depend on the education they receive when they are young. Thus, it is a teacher’s role to mould children by giving the best education in a positive direction at a young age. There are many rules of teaching. One of the rule of teaching is to ‘ASSUME NOTHING’ at the start of the class. Teachers need to give a brief introduction of him or herself and also to get the students to do one as well. Teachers would need to be able to form a good rapport with the student as teaching is a always a two way relationship instead of one. A comfortable environment and having a mutual respect and trust between student and teacher is very important. Furthermore, a teacher would need to ensure the students learn the knowledge, skill to achieve their qualification by the end of the course. As a teacher, we would need to create interest or motivate students in learning the language. This could be done by having different approaches in teaching / leading the class depending on the student’s age, size of the class as well as the level of language in the class. Games, music even role playing could be done in classes to make learning more interesting and exciting. A teacher would also need to be flexible and creative in class as there are more than one student in class. Each student would have different weakness and strength, interest in different things. In order to be able to evaluate their weakness and strength, teachers would then need to monitor the student’s performances, keep record of attendance, scores of different test, as well as topic taught. This would also help a teacher in planning lessons for future classes. Punctuality is one of the most important role of a teacher. As we are role models to the students, we need to be able to show that not only students need to be on time to classes but teachers as well. Being punctual in class would also mean that the teacher is ready to start the class on time and would be able to greet the students at the start of the class giving a positive and cheerful start. This would also make the students feel comfortable and at ease to be able to be involve in class. As teachers, we not only need to teach the language but also ethics in students. When a student is young, they are like a piece of white paper and we, as teachers have the responsibility to develop basic human values in students during classes. Disciplining the student would also be part of the teacher’s role. A teacher would also need to establish a safe and clean environment for students to be able to be comfortable and able to learn the language. Organization of seating arrangement is one of the role of a teacher in class. In conclusion, there are many roles and responsibilities in being a teacher. There are many challenges in being a good teacher but, a teacher’s job is very rewarding. We would be able to see the results from our students when they grow up. As the future lies in the hands of children, teacher’s role and responsibility are very important.
