Unit 11 was about the two receptive skills - reading and listening. It outlined that there are two broad reasons for why we read and listen, either for a purpose or to be entertained. There are also different ways that we read and listen; scanning, skimming, detailed reading and using our predictive skills depending on what type of information we want to know. Teaching receptive skills is not always easy, however there are ways to approach this problem as a teacher. By carefully choosing texts, interesting topics and pre-teaching vocabulary to students we can help to develop these skills and their learning ability further.
