Every English teacher would like to have some qualities with which they will be able to keep students and learners interested and want to learn the English language. A few of a teachers personal qualities will be listed below: 1. A teacher should really love teaching. According to Robert John Meehan, "teachers who love teaching; teach children to love learning." This is an important quality all teachers should have. A teacher who does not love and enjoy their job can not be effective at all. You can not expect your students to enjoy the class if you are not enjoying the class. Teaching a language requires more than telling students what the rules of English are. You must be able to identify strengths of a learner as well as their weakness, know the most appropriate method of skill transfer in order to make a jump from a language specialist to a teacher. 2. A teacher should be kind and patient. A teacher should be very patient with their student keeping in mind that English might not be their native language. Even if the student makes mistakes or has problems, the teacher should never give up on his or her students and would carry on helping them to succeed in school. They (the teachers') must need to do more than just show patience with students. Teachers must understand them, too. Essentially patience without understanding is not patience, but an empty form of waiting. 3. A teacher should be lively and entertaining. Laugh with your students whenever possible. If you can lighten the mood during a lesson, it could make the whole lesson a better experience for everybody. Try to incorporate fun games and activities into your lesson plans that require participation and carry explicit understanding that we are laughing with -and not at- each other. 4.A teacher should be able to motivate learners. One of the most difficult, but important aspects of being an English teacher, is learning how to motivate your students. Students who are motivated will: not learn effectively, not retain information, not participate, and some of them may become disruptive. A student may be unmotivated for a variety of reasons: They may feel they have no interest in the language, find the teachers methods un-engaging or be distracted by external forces. Motivated students are more excited to learn and participate. Teaching a class full of motivated students is enjoyable for teacher and students alike. Here are effective ways to get your students excited about learning: - Encourage students You should encourage open communication and freethinking with your students to make them feel important. Be enthusiastic. Praise your students often. A "well done", "good job" or "nice work" can go a long way. -Get them involved If you are going over a reading In class ask students to take turns reading sections out loud. Make students work in groups and assign each a task or role. Giving students a sense of ownership makes them feel accomplished and encourages active participation in class. -Get creative Teach through games and discussions instead of lectures. Enrich the subject matter with visual aids, like colourful charts, diagrams, videos, and models. Your physical classroom should never be boring: use posters, models, student projects and seasonal themes to decorate your classroom and create a warm and stimulating environment. There are a lot more qualities and characteristics that can be added but the few that were mentioned above are one of the more important qualities. A teacher should really care about his or her teaching, but should care even more about the learning of the students.
