I would not have thought to include more open ended questions in a placement test, but the unit makes very good points about their use in determining fluency, motivation and level. Especially as regards level, there is a degree of understanding and difficulty to creating and crafting original sentences that is a bit higher and more revealing than filling in the blank. Astute students can often use clues in multiple choice questions -- or be reminded of certain rules from other questions - and use this to assist in their answering. Answering an open-ended question gives a more well-rounded view of a student's abilities.
