There are different ways to assess a student's language level. This can be done by tutorials, evaluation by the students and tests. Tests can be given at different stages in a course. Placement tests are designed to place new students into the correct class according to their language ability. Progress tests are used to evaluate what language has been remembered and what language has been forgotten. They should include all four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening). Diagnostic tests are given at the start of the course to see what students already know. Practice tests are a preparation for an external exam.
