I have gained a lot from this course. But for time's sake I will sum it down to two things: what I have learned about myself taking the course, and what I learned about teaching a course. The plan was to take an online teaching course, move to another country, and start teaching english. Easy, right? I don't think so. The online teaching course consisting of 20 units was not so easy. Me being an American since birth, not living in any other country, and not speaking any other languages, not even the native tongue of my parents (Tagalog), had me thinking learning to teach english would be second nature. Not true. There was so much in the course I did not know. There was so much in the course that showed me I speak with a lot of slang, most of the time in not so proper english. In taking this course I have learned that I can push myself to accomplishing a program such as this. I've learned that I have enough discipline to stop what I'm doing, set aside time to study and finish the tasks. In this school there is no physical place for me to show up and no one to tell me when to do things. This was all on me. If I fail, or if I succeed, this was all on me. I have never been a teacher. Here and there, I have taught a few people a few things but never was I a formal teacher. In this course I have learned the finer things in teaching, the smaller details, like being aware of all the levels of the students, using techniques like ice breakers and warm ups to learn about individual students' personalities. Also resourcefulness and creativity when creating a lesson plan, not just picking one straight out of a course book. I plan on putting all of this into action by showing up to the onsite training and absorbing all they have to teach me. As well as remembering the lessons from the tasks and referring back to them, if needed, I have all the tools I need to succeed. I feel if I had the discipline to finish an online course such as this one, I have the discipline to become a teacher of the english language.
