The tefl course gained me insights and knowledge on teaching skills and language awareness. Those techniques will be very useful in teaching inside the classroom or anywhere where teaching is needed. It was certainly useful to brush up my grammar again, that is an aspect of the language which most people never think of anymore after their study. Before I took this course I had no real idea how to teach english to foreign students. Of course I have my own experiences with learning and observing teachers when I attended college years ago, but this course has a new approach to me, involving students much more than previously thought would be possible. The ESA model and its variations is very useful and productive teaching system which allows also a lot of freedom for the teacher as well for the students in a very interactive way. The lesson plans are particularly useful in oder to get a clear idea upfront what the lesson should entail: The Engage Stage arousing the students' interest and engage their emotions. The Study Stage focus on language (or information) and how it is constructed. The Activate stage(s) designed to get students to use the language as communicatively as they can. These different stages give lessons a richness and variety which students surely appreciate. The video in Unit 10 is particularly helpful to see how teaching really works and how it doesn't work in an actual setting. The feedback by my tutor at the end of each unit session is/was very educational and helpful. If I would become a teacher I would most definitely keep and promote the ESA method and keep the lesson plan log as my red line throughout a given course. The course made me more confident in my teaching ability, and prepared me in the best way possible for the problems and methods a teacher awaits in the classroom.
