This unit focused on teaching the two productive skills: speaking and writing. These skills are both used for the same purpose, which is to communicate. In teaching these skills, there are two different types of activities that can be used--accuracy and fluency activities. When teaching speaking skills in the classroom, a teacher may use controlled, guided, and/or creative communication activities that range from accuracy-based, accuracy-based with more creative freedom, to fluency-based. Teachers must learn to encourage students to speak and interact in the classroom for optimal effectiveness. When teaching writing skills, the major concerns are handwriting, spelling, layout and punctuation, and encouraging creative writing. I learned practical tools in this unit on understanding how to be a more effective teacher in this area, including how to encourage students to be creative. There were many practical techniques presented in this unit that will be a great help in my classroom setting.
