This unit covers the different types of intonation, for instance rise/fall intonation and when each type is used in a sentence. Stresses on words are also covered, describing which syllables in a word are usually stressed, what types of words are usually stressed in a sentence and how the meaning of a sentence can change depending on what words are stressed. From this section I learned that one word can only have one primary stressed syllable and only a syllable can be stressed, not individual vowels or consonants. The different ways sounds of indivual words can be joined or changed when placed in a sentence is covered; these are linking, dropping, changing and extra lettering. Phonetics are also discussed, covering what their purpose is and what the symbols are for each sound. From this section I learned the different phonics symbols and what sounds they represent. Finally articulation is covered, the unit describes the different places in your mouth and speech organs where the various types of sounds are made and the different types of sounds that are made in the english language. I learnt the names of the different places of articulation in your mouth. I also learned many useful techniques and activites for teaching these topics to a class.
