Unit 13 was about teaching pronunciation and phonology.It was a longer unit and covered quite a bit. Phonology is the study of the physical properties of sound. Intonation is the variation of pitch in a sentence, and stress is which syllable is stressed in a word or sentence. Stress and intonation help carry the meaning in a sentence. There are general rules about which syllables are stressed in words. For example, in two-syllable nouns and adjectives, generally the first syllable is stressed. Often fluent speakers may join sounds, drop sounds, change sounds, or even add sounds. The phonetic symbols for sounds in English are introduced. In the section on articulation, speech organs and places of articulation, and manner of articulation are covered. Ways to teach all of these things are suggested. This was a lengthy chapter with much material covered. Perhaps it could be divided into two units.
