Unit 13 was about pronunciation and intonation. Intonation is the changes in pitch throughout a sentence. There are three main types of intonation: rise/fall, fall/rise, and flat. While rise/fall is the most common of the three, all are used in daily conversation, making them each important to understand. Stress was also a big topic in this unit. To put stress on a word is to put emphasis on it, which can change the meaning an connotation of an entire sentence. For example, let's use the sentence, "She wanted coffee." When the stressed word is SHE, then that usually would imply that the question was 'who' wanted coffee. If the stressed word is COFFEE, then it implies that what she wanted was unknown. The phonetic alphabet is very useful from a teaching perspective. It gives teachers the tools to correctly pronounce words, and is especially helpful in differentiating between similar words.
