A language has four skills, divided into two areas. Reading and listening are receptive skills. Speaking and writing are productive skills. All are important. People have different reasons when they are reading or listening, but the two main reason are for a specific purpose or for leisure. We employ different skills when we read or listen and it depends what we are trying to achieve. For example a person might skim read an article to get the general gist, or scan for the information we need.
