This unit is about teaching receptive skills. Receptive skills are reading and listening. The reasons for reading and listening can be divided into two main categories, i.e. for a purpose and for entertainment. There are a number of specialist skills needed for listening and reading successfully: predictive skills, scanning, skimming, detailed reading and deduction. Some potential problems that may occur when teaching receptive skills are mainly linked to the language contained in the text, the topic, and the tasks. These potential problems can be avoid by pre-teaching the difficult words that are essential to understanding, selecting texts carefully, selecting topics carefully, creating interest before reading/listening, and providing comprehension tasks that promote understanding.
