This unit went over some of the aspects of teaching receptive skills, as well as some of the difficulties that can arise. It pointed out that there is more to language than just knowing what a word literally means. A student has to be able to also see a word and understand its meaning in a particular context. The unit discussed four different skills: skimming, scanning, predicting, and detailed reading. These are things that people do in their own languages without really having to think about it, but when practicing these skills in a different language one can come across difficulties if they do not have a broader, less literal meaning of words.
