The four basic skills in any language include reading and listening (receptive) and speaking and writing (productive). Unit 11 focuses on the receptive skills. We learn about various reasons for reading and listening, for a purpose and for entertainment. We also learn how it can be a mix of both. The next part of learning in this unit is about the way people read and listen. We do it with our eyes and ears but also our minds to understand the words and process them in our pre-existing knowledge to gain the true meaning of the words/phrases. The skills a learner will use during this process depend on their expertise in the following areas. Predictive skills - Predicting the content of the article from a headline or introduction. Specific information – Scanning through and reading only what you want to read. Detailed information – Read all the content in order to understand everything in detail. Deduction of context – Sometimes we need to understand the meaning/individual words/ phrases from the context Skimming – Getting a general idea. In this we do not focus on every single word but get the general understanding of the context. The learner of English language faces a number of problems. These problems are mainly connected to the language in the text, the topic and the tasks the student will perform. Language. Sentence length, word length and number of unfamiliar words can present some problems to the English learner. Reading presents fewer problems as the text is captured on paper and students have the chance to read it countless times. This gives them the opportunity to think about the text and the context. Listening however poses other difficulties since the language is not captured and have no time to be completely comprehended. The more language we expose the students to, the more they will learn. There are several ways of approaching language difficulty. Pre-teaching vocabulary Careful selection of texts – authentic and non authentic. Authentic texts are not designed for language students. It exposes students to texts that should give them confidence in their skills. Non authentic will allow the students access to material that contains language more suited to the student’s abilities. Topics – As a teacher it is important to know what the students like. If they like the topic they will most likely be interested in the lesson too. Create interest.
