Reading and listening skills are very important for the student to learn. They are of equal importance but one must be aware of the differences in approaches. Reading enables the student to have the text to refer to and to re-read and to study at their own pace. Listening activities strengthen the student's ability to grasp ideas at a quick pace and have only one try to digest the information. It is important to teach both skills as some students are visual learners and some students are auditory learners. The teacher's attitude and enthusiasm for a topic helps to engage the students. It is important to get to know your students so you can tailor readings and listening activities to subjects that interest or are of importance to the students. I have the goal of using more skimming and scanning activities in my classes. These are not skills that I have tried with my low level/emergent reader students.
