When teaching language, there are two receptive skills that students need to learn, listening and reading. Both are equally important. When teaching receptive skills, its important to remember that we do not interact with all language in the same way. You probably wouldn't read a newspaper article on your favourite sports teams score the same way you read a book. Likewise, you wouldn't listen to your boss give you instructions the same way you listen to your friend tell a story. By supplying a variety of materials and activities, a teacher can help students practice their skimming, scanning, predictive, deductive, and detailed information bathing skills.
