Unit 11 is about how to teach receptive skills. Two main types of receptive skills are listening and reading. I learned that reading and listening is done by the eyes, mind and ears. The mind plays a significant part in reading and listening because it is able to relate the existent knowledge to the content of the reading material. Again, I have discovered that it is important to choose varieties of topics which is suitable to the student's interest. To have a successful reading activity, students should have skills such as skimming, scanning, deductive and detailed information reading for better understanding. Teachers can have straight ESA and patchwork method to teach receptive skills. For example, for Engage stage teacher can play the song or video to attract student's interest. In the study stage, teachers can pre-teach difficult words or phrases before students read/listen. After that, teachers can give articles or interview dialogues to students to read/listen. For an active stage, teachers can give various activities to check for student's understanding. This may include jigsaw reading, jumbled text.
