The unit's focus was on teaching the receptive skills, listening and reading. Reasons for listening or reading can be divided into two purposes, for entertainment or for a purpose. Students will be more motivated if they are listening or reading about a topic that interests them. This can be accomplished by choosing a varity of topics and by creating interest during the Engage phase of the lesson. To avoid the students losing their motivation, careful consideration should be given to the text being read and words that are essential to understanding should be pre-taught.
