The unit teaches receptive skills which are reading and writing skills. It exposes the reasons and motives behind using the receptive skills as for prediction, scanning, skimming, deduction and concentration purposes. Furthermore, it proffers ways in which problems relating to teaching receptive skills can be effectively handled. It emphasizes the need to make a careful selection of texts to suit the learners' level and their interest. Equally, it suggests that difficult vocabulary should first be taught before engaging in a listening or reading text. This will make the text more comprehensible to the students and build their confidence in language use.
