This unit focuses on English pronunciation and how to teach it. Intonation patterns, word and syllable stress/emphasis are important to language as they communicate meaning beyond the words used, and the meaning communicated will change as the phonology changes. Understanding phonetics is important for a teacher of english particularly due to the variety of sounds assigned to many identical letter groupings (ie: ough,) and differences in accent, and geographical pronunciation. The phonetic alphabet provides a universal way to indicate specifically sound regardless of spelling, accent, regional differences, etc. Also included in the unit are some types of exercises useful in teaching learners how to form sounds and recognize correct meaning of phonetic structures.
