This unit explains the definition of phonology: the science and classification of the physical properties of sound. This unit also explains how to use the International Phonetic Alphabet to help students learn the correct pronunciation of English. This unit further explains the difference between intonation and stress. For example, I learned that intonation is classified as the variation in volume and pitch in a whole sentence, whereas stress is classified with individual words. I also learned that intonation is used to express feelings and emotions in a sentence. This unit also explains different techniques for teaching stress, such as using gestures like clapping or tapping on the desk, or underlining the stressed words on the board. Furthermore, I learned about sound joining, such as linking or sound dropping. I also learned the phonemic symbols in the phonemic alphabet.
