This unit extensively discusses the teaching of phonology and pronunciation with particular attention to intonation, rhythm and stress. The different types of intonation in English and their specific uses are discussed with illustrations. Equally, word stress with relation to meaning is explained. Suggestions are provided on how stress should be placed on a syllable in polysyllabic words. The phonology of English is explained in terms of the place and manner of articulation of its consonant sounds. Also, word examples are given for all the forty four sounds in English. Some pronunciation teaching techniques are also offered.
