This unit provided a brief overview of the topic of teaching pronounciation to students as well as the study of phonology. As this unit was centered on laying down general guidelines for English pronounciation, the unit contained broad reviews of the different facets of English pronounciation (intonation, stress, rhythym, and a general introduction into phonology/phonetics - utilizing the standard IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet)). After giving a basic definition of and introduction to each topic, the unit also served to provide some basic teaching recommendations for each, as well as giving a rationale in the introduction to the unit as to why this unit is important and necessary for students. I found this unit helpful in that it provided a working knowledge of the different topics concerned with English pronounciation that I did not possess before; for example, the section covering syllable stress contained knowledge that I hadn't learned or been taught myself. The phonology/phonetics section also provided a useful review of IPA and how we may use it to help students with English pronounciation. All in all, as stated in the unit introduction, I feel that I lack the training and confidence to tackle this particular area of English teaching, and had not been taught much about this area in prior schooling; in this way, the brief overview provided by this unit was particularly helpful, and I feel that I can use it effectively in my future classes and now understand how I may teach/pronounciation as well as feeling a responsibility to include the topic in my classes more.
