Receptive skills, though sometimes underestimated in importance, can be a crucial part of learning a new language. There are roughly two types of receptive skills, 1.) for entertainment and 2.) for a certain purpose. Contrary to common belief, teaching receptive skills also requires much consideration as to what will be heard or read, and also require certain phases for education. Choosing from interesting topics and pre-teaching unfamiliar vocabulary words may be useful in teaching receptive skills, and increase the efficiency of the classroom, by allowing more student participation. The language difficulty should always be taken in consideration when teaching receptive skills, just as productive skills are taught.
