Unit 11 explored teaching the receptive skills of reading and listening. It identified two primary reasons that one reads, for pleasure and to gain information and the differences between the two reasons. The unit then examined the concept of not only reading with the senses of sight and sound, but also that fact that one reads with one's mind. It followed with an overview of the skills one uses when reading. Problems non-English learners might experience and strategies for minimizing these difficulties was covered with discussion on the importance of relevance of materials to students and appropriate reading levels of materials being important.
