Imagine a job you look forward to participate in everyday. Perhaps you don’t have to “go” anywhere, but merely log onto a website and begin. The convenience alone is worth its weight in gold. Or perhaps you hear the playful chatter of children and you realize “I will be teaching them to speak English later today.”, Knowing that by learning this skill, they will be setting themselves up for a successful life. The satisfaction one may receive as a TEFL teacher can have many facets and there are many reasons why one may want to teach English. In this summative task I would like to explore what I see as three of the primary reasons a person may want to take a TEFL course and become a certified TEFL Teacher. Firstly, there is a real need for English teachers in foreign countries. There are over 7.6 billion people on Earth and only about 1.5 Billion speak English. Of those, only 400 million are native English speakers. Of course, not everyone will need to learn English, but many will. English is the language of business and commerce around the world, and other countries realize this. By having their citizens learn English, they are preparing them to be competent members of global society, able to navigate proficiently within this space. Aspiring teachers wishing to aid in the filling of this need would be wise to gain a TEFL certificate, indicating potential employers that they are qualified to teach English to non English speakers. Secondly, many people desire to have a flexible career, one where working from home is an option, as is traveling and immersing themselves in a foreign culture. Many have spent years working at a traditional “9-5” job and desire a change. The idea of being able to work from home is convenient for stay at home moms or dads, looking to supplement their income. Visiting exotic locations sounds enticing and rewarding. The benefit of becoming TEFL Certified is that they can do any or all of this - and all while earning a nice income! Finally, people desire a fulfilling career. A career where one helps others is a keen way to do this! The need to help others is innate and holding a career where you do this on a daily basis can be a lasting source of satisfaction for the teacher. Teaching is one of the most fulfilling jobs one can have. Having the knowledge that you are preparing others to succeed in life is something that money cannot buy. In conclusion, people wishing to have a satisfying and fulfilling career, a career that is also flexible - and may even take you to exotic locations - should consider becoming an English teacher for those who do not natively speak English. There is a need and a demand for such individuals. Teaching English as a foreign language is a booming industry with a great need for competent teachers, and completing a TEFL course is a wonderful first step in beginning this journey.
