Confidence is an important aspect when it comes to students' attitudes in a classroom setting and they can lose that confidence quickly. It is important for a teacher to know how to keep the student motivated and confident that they will be able to learn the materials given to them. There are a number of ways a teacher can help with this. Some of the things they can do are praise the student, don’t over correct, and keep the activities at their language level. Praise goes a long way when it comes to students' confidence, it lets them know they’re doing a good job and that what they did or said was correct. This is one of the methods that work the most with any student age group, however, the ages that crave this treatment the most are young learners. Young learners are always wanting to satisfy their teachers and when they’re praised it makes them feel happy, motivated, and confident so they will keep working hard to be praised again. As the age of the students grows, they still appreciate being praised but sometimes it doesn’t stick like it would with a younger learner. So, regardless of the age group, teachers should always praise their students whenever it is prominent. Another way to help build a student's confidence is to not over correct. Over correcting students will not only make the students lose confidence in their English ability but will also make them not want to participate in class. This is the last thing a teacher would want from any student because class participation is essential to a successful lesson. Mistakes are meant to happen in order for a student to learn and there will always be another time when a teacher will be able to correct what the student did wrong. For example, if a student makes a mistake during the engage or activate part of the lesson the teacher should take note and wait until the study part of the lesson. This way the students don’t lose confidence and feel they are losing face with their classmates and will still be able to learn when the teacher is correcting at a different time. Lastly, activities that are at the same language level as the students will keep their confidence in their learning abilities. Students will often feel frustrated when they can’t figure out what to do on their activities, and it only makes sense when the assignment is too difficult. For example, if a teacher were to give beginner students a worksheet that was designed for advanced students the students would lose motivation and their confidence in being able to complete their task. This is why keeping worksheets at their language level is important. Plus, demonstrating the activity will always boost the students' confidence as well as assure the teacher that their class is completing it correctly. In conclusion, teachers can raise confidence in their students in many ways, some of them would be praise, not over correcting, and keeping activities the same language level as the student. Praise can go a long way, it assures that the student is correct and that they’re doing well, this will keep them participating in class discussions and activities. If a teacher over corrects, students lose confidence and won’t want to participate in class so, in order to keep from over correcting, a teacher should take notes on what errors are made and make sure to go over it during the study phase of the lesson. Lastly, keeping the activities at the language level of the students and demonstrating help keep students from getting frustrated. The confidence of a student is just as important as their motivation so it is important for a teacher to know how to build that confidence with all their students.
