Teach English in Zhoutie Zhen - Wuxi Shi
Grammar is a basic and essential factor in learning language. So teaching grammar is really important, but more challenge when we teach language for young learners because most of them are reluctant and interruptive. In my opinion, it's so hard to teach grammar for children. As you know, grammar is a unique language system and it helps our language skills more perfect and appreciated. When we say something in English, there are many ways to express our attitude in the statements though intonation, pronunciation, gestures, and grammar. So when we say a sentence, other people will judge us through that by grammar tool. A too short answer proves that we are not enough polite if we answer our parents'question. In contrary, a too long answer makes us bored in front of some people. Grammar helps our language perfect in knowledge, absorbing everything around, emotions and conveying ability. On the other hand, if a teacher wishes her students to absorb and use grammatical structures in different contexts, she needs to have more effective techniques and methods. It is really hard to explain a grammar structure for students when they are about 6-11 years old. They can not pay muc attention in class when we talk about structures. It is boring for them. This is easier if we teach grammar for teenagers. How can we do that? As we know, most of children are easy to be disruptive. They are hard to focus on the lesson in a long time. They need multiple changed activities in class. So teachers always face with problems in a large class or special class. They ways that the teacher applies in class are very important. For example, today I teach my students how to use "simple past tense" with some common verbs. If I write only the table with verbs in present and past tense that makes students bored and make noise because they don't want to listen the unfamiliar topic. So I will engage students with some questions about their activities yesterday before I introduce the new lesson. I will ask the question: "Well, I want to know what you did yesterday. Who can tell me?" and some volunteers will answer my questions. And most of children like to talk about themselves, so they will get eager to answer and then I will introduce a story about Alice with some pictures on BB to teach students how to express actions in the past. According to psychology of children, they are often curious and interested in much fun. So we need to give them suitable contexts to use language. For example, I use worksheet to activate students in pair-work technique. They will work in pair to find out verbs in past tense in the story by circling the words with a pencil. This activity helps them much more fun to learn instead of asking them write the words in individuals. From young learners' interests in class, I know what they need. I often use games, chants, songs,...in class to draw their attention. Because grammar is not only difficult but also essential in language, so to make children understand and apply it, we should know what their interests are. "Study is fun" is my slogan in teaching English for children. The best way to help children use grammatical structures in class is giving them chances to practice through interesting activities in using language skills. In speaking, I often give my students some activities like survey day,I am a reporter, find a partner,... Before I start to activate them, I will explain the new structure and give them short and clear instructions. Then the students will start the activity. I will monitor around the class to help them in need. Class management is also worth to mention here because we need to solve anticipated problems. In inclusion, teaching grammar is never simple and easy because young learners need more interesting lessons from teachers. So "how to attract them to engage the lesson? How to help young learners understand structures and use them in language?",.. .Those questions need to be answered by teachers.
